Kargil Martyrs

The Government had introduced a special scheme in the year 1999 for allotment of 500 retail outlets of petroleum products to widows/next of kin of martyrs in Operation Vijay (Kargil). Out of the 500 earmarked for allotment only 446 candidates were found to be eligible and willing. Accordingly, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has commissioned 446 petrol pumps/gas agencies, out of which 303 are petrol pumps and 143 are gas agencies.

Widows/next of kin of Kargil martyrs have been paid an ex-gratia of Rs.10 lakh each and have been sanctioned liberalized family pension. They have also been given Rs. 5 lakh for housing and Rs. 1 lakh per child or Rs. 2 lakh per family for education of children. Rs. 2 lakh has also been paid as parental assistance.

This information was given by Minister of State for Defence Shri Jitendra Singh in a written reply to Shri Sameer Bhujbalin Lok Sabha today.
