Supreme Court issues notice to UGC to enhance superannuation age from 62 to 65

New Delhi: 23.02.2009
The Supreme Court issued notices to University Grants Commission (UGC) and state of Bihar on a petition filed by Dr B R Ambedkar Bihar University Senior Teachers Association, praying to the court to enhance their age of superannuation from 62 years to 65 years.

A bench comprising Justices Lokeshwar Singh Panta and B Sudarshan Reddy issued notices after hearing senior counsel M N Rao, R S Singh who contended that the age of superannuation for central universities is 65 years and therefore, there should be uniformity in the age of retirement.

They also contended that qualification and other service conditions are the same in case of state university teachers as well as for the teachers of central universities and therefore, there is no justification for discrimination in the age of superannuation.B R Ambedkar University is situated in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar.

Supreme court has issued notices to UGC and Govt Of Bihar. But the matter has not been followed up with the result careeer of thousands of teachers is jeopardized after attaining age of 65 years as no State is obliging them by giving what is DUE to them. UGC must enforce it.

What about the employees of other departments? They also deserve the revision of age limit for superannuation. I have to file a writ petition in the High Court in this regard. Can any body tell me here which officer will represent Govt. of India in this regard?

The entry age of non-teaching staff is between 21-28 years whereas the average entry age of UGC teaching staff (with PG+PhD degree) is 30-40 years. Dont UGC professors deserve 30-35 years of service?

As per UGC superannuation age from 62 to 65 for all lecterors, professors, physical education and librarians of unversities, colleges, NIT's and all IIT'S,but unfortunately or intentionally physical educational personel and librarians superannuation age is fixed to 60 instead of 62 or 65 (as per UGC norms)Previously upto 2010 all physical educational personel and librarians of superannuation age was 62 but suddenly instead of increase from 62 to 65 it got decreased from 62 to 60. It is very unfortunate and ultimate discrimination amongst few.
