Labour & Employment Ministers Visit to US

Union Minister for Labour & Employment Shri Mallikarjun Kharge has expressed the hope that the ongoing dialogue and cooperation between Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India and the US Department of Labour, that would be further enhanced by the signing of a MoU by him and the US Secretary of Labour in Washington DC tomorrow (2 February, 2012).

Shri Kharge was inter acting with a large and broad-based gathering of the vibrant Indian-American community in Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) metropolitan area at a function organized in his honour by two prominent community organizations, Indian American Friendship Council (IAFC) and India Association of North Texas (IANT), in cooperation with Consulate General of India, Houston, very recently.

It may be noted that Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge, accompanied by senior officials, had visited Dallas on 29 - 30 January, 2012. He along with the delegation participated in a programme at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), which started with a ceremony to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi on the Martyrs’ Day, and included visit to UTA facilities such as the Center for Continuing Education Workforce Development (CEWDC) and Simulation Training at Smart Hospital, and exchange of views on issues of mutual interest.

The Minister highlighted Government of India’s major initiatives and schemes for poverty alleviation, universalization of elementary education, skill development, social welfare of workers and employment generation. LEM, inter alia, informed the gathering about the salient features of programmes such as Rashtriya Swasthya Beema Yojna, a health insurance scheme for families below the poverty line; National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme; Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan; and Mid-Day Meal Scheme.
